EE Spotlight: Collaboration & Innovation in Careers Education

EE Spotlight is our new initiative where we highlight the varied exciting projects we work on at Engaging Education. Every few weeks we will be shining a spotlight on a different theme across our social media channels, with examples of current collaborations as well as campaign ideas.

May 2021 was our first EE Spotlight theme: Collaboration and Innovation in Careers Education. In case you missed it, here’s a summary of what we covered in May’s spotlight.

Virtual Work Experience

Over the last year, we have worked closely with the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to deliver engaging and meaningful work experience to young people despite Covid restrictions. So far, we have worked on virtual work experience (VWX) packs across four sectors: Construction, Manufacturing & Engineering, Creative & Digital and HealthTech.

We worked with the LEP to form connections with local organisations, creating films to showcase the variety of roles within each sector – particularly the ones that young people may not know about. We also put together activity booklets, or ‘Live Briefs’ which provide young people with tasks relating to three roles in each sector, all connected to core areas of the curriculum.

We have loved hearing from teachers and students who have used the VWX resources and found them useful, informative alternatives to face-to-face work placements. We continue to collaborate with the LEP to develop these resources further and ensure that young people across Leeds City Region have access to high quality careers education despite current restrictions.

Next Steps Toolkit

In addition to VWX resources, we are working with the LEP to create inspirational resources for young people thinking about their next steps towards a career. The Next Steps Toolkit includes worksheets designed to provide practical advice and activities in a variety of areas including developing employability skills, writing cover letters and interview technique.

As part of our work on the Next Steps Toolkit, we have also captured a variety of films in local organisations with inspiring individuals who have overcome barriers to employment. The aim of these films is to showcase the variety of possible pathways into employment and to inspire young people who may already be experiencing barriers themselves.

We are proud to collaborate with the LEP on the Next Steps Toolkit as a way to provide practical, tangible advice and guidance to young people planning their next steps.

National Careers Week

We have worked with National Careers Week (NCW) for a number of years now, promoting and celebrating excellent careers education across the country. As part of this work, we have helped to create resources and campaigns to support schools to meet Gatsby Benchmarks and provide high quality careers education for all.

We also help to promote NCW across their social media channels, creating attention-grabbing campaigns. Social media (especially Twitter) is the most reactive digital platform, and a great way to promote events and engage with resources. This has been particularly important over the last year as face-to-face engagement has been limited, and we have loved seeing schools showing off their participation in NCW digitally!

Interior Displays

As well as collaborating on careers education with organisations such as NCW and the LEP, we work with our partner schools and academies to create engaging displays to get students thinking about their career pathways. These displays can include information about roles in a range of sectors, post-16 options, alumni destinations and more. They are designed to inspire students and present a range of possible journeys and destinations.
