PedTech Explained: A Case Study in Animation

Animations are a great way to showcase your unique selling points and make even the most complex information feel more accessible and engaging.

Our ongoing brand awareness project for LEO Academy Trust saw us develop a range of materials designed to promote the Trust’s adoption of PedTech, an innovative, pedagogy-first approach to educational technology.

As technology and AI solutions continue to be a hot-button issue in education, our goal is to present our partners as the go-to experts and trendsetters in improving attainment and inclusion through digital tools.

Inspired by Dr Fiona Aubrey-Smith’s research on PedTech, our team has been developing a series of informative animations to explain the benefits of digital classrooms and what LEO’s PedTech approach looks like in practice.

Content Insights

The script for all the animations in the series, titled ‘PedTech: Explained’ repurposes and reframes LEO’s ongoing blog series, breaking down the long-form content to its most fundamental and engaging aspects.

Efficiency comes first. Every animation in the series showcases LEO Academy Trust’s unique selling points, focusing on how the Trust puts its resources and expertise into practice by using digital scaffolding tools, 1:1 Chromebooks for all pupils, AI tools and more.

Animations are not the right medium for obscure acronyms or long sentences.

We use compelling questions at the very beginning of the script to catch the attention of the audience and spark their curiosity, making sure to keep all information brief and relevant to the topic at hand.

Our goal is to provide the most insightful information in the fewest words possible. This ensures that every film is memorable and clearly displays our partner’s incredible work and expertise in the field, in a way that any audience would understand.

Design Insights

Planning and pre-production are crucial for any animation project but especially for a project like ‘PedTech: Explained’. As we are developing a coherent series rather than a standalone animation, it’s important to ensure consistency across all films to create a recognisable brand.

The process starts with a rough storyboard through open collaboration with the Copy and Content Team, which is then developed into a clean storyboard for sign-off. Next, we pick the perfect voiceover to elevate the content, making sure that our choice of VO matches the local cadence and accent for the Trust’s region.

Looking at the many fun elements found in the LEO animations, we wanted a voice with plenty of character that didn’t sound too cold or corporate. The same attention goes to the choice of background music: we wanted something playful to complement the VO and the fun visuals, all without being too distracting.

In terms of branding, the animation series naturally lent itself well to the rebrand work we carried out for LEO in 2024, which focused on a modular bento box style.

Our goal is to celebrate LEO’s PedTech approach and impact on children’s lives through animation, without the films feeling heavy or overloaded with information. Our choice of visuals is energetic and engaging, while the upbeat audio and sound effects bring fun and lightheartedness.

Creative Solutions for Change-Making Partners

The PedTech: Explained animation series is designed to be used in a variety of settings to showcase LEO’s achievements, expertise and thought leadership in educational technology.

From assemblies to websites and social media campaigns, the animations are suitable for a wide range of audiences, regardless of their prior knowledge of PedTech or digital classrooms.

We couldn’t be prouder of our results so far and look forward to expanding our partners’ brand presence, online and offline, with more creative design solutions and dynamic animation work!
