Breaking the Cycle: How We Created ‘Anyone. Anywhere.’ to Tackle Relationship Abuse Among Young People

At Engaging Education, we are privileged to work on projects that truly make a difference. When Humber VPP commissioned us to create a programme addressing relationship abuse among young people, we knew this was more than just another project—it was a chance to create real change.

Understanding the Challenge

Relationship abuse is a critical issue, yet one that is often misunderstood or overlooked, especially among young people. From coercive control to gaslighting, unhealthy relationship behaviours can manifest in subtle ways, making them difficult to recognise. Our challenge was clear: to develop a programme that educates young people about the warning signs of abuse, equips them with the tools to foster healthy relationships, and provides guidance for those who may be exhibiting harmful behaviours.

This journey began with months of in-depth research. We consulted with charities such as The Blue Door and Barnardo’s, educators, and organisations that specialise in relationship abuse. We also worked closely with an expert consultant to ensure that our programme was both comprehensive and sensitive to the realities young people face. Alongside these meetings, we held student workshops to really get to the core of the topic from a young person’s perspective – they also helped our Design Team settle on an engaging and age-appropriate set of visuals! The result? ‘Anyone. Anywhere. Understanding Healthy Relationships’—a six-module programme designed to educate, empower, and break the cycle of abuse.

The Programme: Anyone. Anywhere.

The free-to-use programme provides young people with essential knowledge about healthy relationships. Each module is designed to be engaging and interactive, featuring discussion prompts, activities, and animated content that bring these critical conversations to life. The modules include animated elements that present key information in an easily digestible way.

The six modules include:

  1. Spotlight on Relationships – Exploring the different relationships in our lives and their impact.
  2. Recognising Behaviours – Understanding the various forms of abuse and their consequences.
  3. Understanding the Cycle – Examining why relationship abuse happens and how to prevent becoming a perpetrator.
  4. Red Flags Vs Green Flags – Identifying healthy vs. unhealthy relationship behaviours and setting personal boundaries.
  5. ‘You’ at the Centre – Building self-esteem and recognising individual responsibilities within a relationship.
  6. Talking to the Right People – Knowing when and how to seek help if experiencing or witnessing abuse.

Each module lasts one hour, making it easy for teachers, parents, and youth leaders to integrate it into their lessons or discussions. Additionally, the programme includes Reflect. Relate. moments—opportunities for young people to pause, think, and share their perspectives.

More Than Just Lessons: Supportive Resources

Beyond the core curriculum, Anyone. Anywhere. offers extra resources to reinforce learning and provide support:

  • Posters for Schools – Designed to be placed in areas like bathroom doors, these posters offer guidance for both victims and perpetrators, emphasising the importance of seeking help.
  • Parent and Carer Guide This digital resource helps parents facilitate open and honest conversations about relationships at home.

The Impact: A Challenging but Rewarding Experience

This project was a deeply meaningful and rewarding experience for our team. While tackling such a sensitive topic came with challenges, the potential to positively impact young people made every moment worthwhile. We are incredibly proud of what we have created and grateful for the collaboration with Humber VPP and the various experts who contributed to this initiative.

Jonathan Evison, Police and Crime Commissioner for Humberside and Chair of the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership (VPP), said:

“Anyone. Anywhere. is a fantastic example of early prevention work. By providing accessible and engaging resources, the campaign helps educational establishments and youth organisations have honest conversations about healthy relationships. This is an important step in the Humber VPP’s mission to create a safer and more positive future for the young people in our region.”

Samantha Dudley, Design Lead at Engaging Education, said:

It was so valuable to involve young people in shaping the visuals for this campaign. We wanted to ensure we were targeting multiple age groups while keeping the message both engaging and impactful. Researching current trends and integrating them into the campaign identity was key to creating something that resonated. We also looked at other charities and organisations, aiming to develop a more empowering message that balanced approachability with the seriousness of the topic. Having student input throughout the process helped us craft a visual identity that truly connected with the audience.”

At Engaging Education, we believe education is one of the most powerful tools for change. By equipping young people with the knowledge to recognise, prevent, and respond to relationship abuse, we hope to create a safer, more informed generation—one that understands that anyone, anywhere, deserves a healthy relationship.
